Scare birds off the field

Start
Good that I see you here {PLAYER_NAME}. Your uncle Nathan is looking for you and wants you to scare off the crows from his fields. He's told me that the harvest won't be good this year to begin with, but that the birds will fully ruin it. There was nothing I could say. The farm has seen better days, mind you.
Finish
Even if the times are hard you shouldn't walk around dressed worse than a scarecrow. Here, have a pair of old clothes. Ah, Nathan is over there, go and talk to him.

I would love to keep you from having to do the dirty work on the fields and send you to the university instead, but the times are hard. We can be happy if we don't have to give up the farm after this year.
Finish
You found a screw driver while you were mucking out the stables? It might be one of your father's. You can keep it.

Butch, from the neighbor's farm is getting on my nerves. I know that he's interested in our farm, but I've told him a few times that we are not selling! But... if we can't harvest the grains very soon, then I'm not sure that we'll have a chance not to.
Finish
Butch seems to be loaded. No idea how he does it. The prices for beef are ridiculously low and I don't think he does anything else on his farm.

Start
Your father used to tend the sheep in any weather. You seem to be made of the same wood, it doesn't seem to bother you any more than it did him when you get soaked tending sheep.
Finish
Are you cold? Well, your father wasn't as sensible then. Here, take this neckband so you can at least keep a warm neck.

Start
You ask me about your parents? Well, there isn't much to say... they had big plans and tried their luck in the West. Abigail and I followed a few years later. It was a good time, but not always easy. There were a lot of dreams and wishes we had to set aside. You were still very young when the typhoid fever got them. But now we've really talked enough. The corn won't harvest itself, you know.
Finish
Abigail has repaired a pair of old boots for you. I'm sure you can use them for your work.

Your parents were hardworking people. But it has always been important to be able to enjoy something special from time to time. They started to grow tomatoes a long time ago. It's tomato season again. Abigail will make a nice tomato salad when you bring her a few tomatoes.
Finish
There are people that don't like tomatoes, but savor ketchup. Isn't that strange? We have so many tomatoes, we can't even eat them all. I will go to the market to sell them, and because you have helped us so much, I will share the earnings with you.

Quest Giver Access requirements Requires Reward

30 minutes

Start
It hasn't rained for weeks. Our neighbor Butch is already grinning from ear to ear. He put up an irrigation system already last year and I'm sure he hopes now, that we'll have to sell our farm due to drought. That cannot happen! Your parents would never have accepted that. You have to put in an irrigation system. We badly need water!
Finish
The work has really paid off. Now the whole river would have to dry out to keep our fields dry. I bought this cap for you when I went to town yesterday because I saw that the sun was blinding you when you were out in the fields.

The winter is coming quickly and our wood supply is not going to get us through the winter. This cold and wet weather doesn't do my rheumatism well. This job you'll have to get done without me again.
Finish
While you were getting the wood and working your muscles I thought I had to do something for you. I made you a fishing rod. I used to love fishing, but the field work just doesn't leave much time. But it is so important to think about something other than work from time to time.

Setting up telegraph poles
2h

Start
Nathan is keeping you pretty busy... I don't want to bud in, but I have known Nathan since he showed up here with Abigail. They took good care of you after your parents died. You were only a few years old at that time. But I'm probably saying too much... But you should know, Nathan is not really your uncle, and Abigail isn't your aunt. I have always hoped that they would tell you themselves one day, but if they haven't done so by now, then I don't expect them to do so in the future. I tell you this because the other day I almost got killed when a telegraph pole came down and almost hit me, right next to my saloon. And I guess then you'd never learn the truth. Could you please go and strengthen that telegraph pole a bit? I'll give you the tools of course, and you can keep it when you are done.
Finish
Great work! I used to get around a lot, and I believe that I'm a good barkeeper, but I'm an awful handyman. Ah, I just remember, I still have a wrench that used to belong to your father. I borrowed it years ago and somehow never remembered to give it back. Here you go.

Start
You have talked to Henry... You didn't talk loudly, but I could pick up a few words. Yes, it is true! I'm not your uncle. Abigail and me came here without anything. There was nothing here but disease, hunger and a few people. One of them was Henry. We went to your parents farm to ask for some water and food. When no one opened the door we went inside and we found you parents dead in their beds. You looked awful and were more dead than alive. We took care of you... and the farm... believe me, it is better if no one else finds out. Henry is the only one other than us that knows the truth, and it should stay that way.Your parent's grave is up at the Wolf Creek... The position of your parent's grave is marked with a yellow dot (Quest giver) on the mini map. Look for it in the middle South, close to a river.
Finish
We never talked about your parent's grave because we though it would be easier for you to leave the past behind. It was a mistake.

Will you please forgive us that we never told you the truth? It was a big mistake to have lied to you for such a long time, but it doesn't change that we have taken you in as our child. We did what had to be done. It would have given us so much trouble if we had told the truth. I have a good recipe against dark thoughts: Hard work. For our smithy we need coals. Finish
I'm sorry {PLAYER_NAME}. I didn't want to yell at you. It's just that the problems are starting to get to me. The harvest wasn't very good this year, and if nothing unexpected happens, I'm going to have to sell the farm. That mustn't happen. And it won't happen if we work together.

Finish
Butch seems to know more than we do. But lets put one and one together. He's building a railroad station and he's very interested in buying your farm. What is so special about your farm? Ah, it doesn't make any sense! Let's take a look at this area on the map... maybe we've missed something...

Finish
We should get the burner out of the barn. It's been a long time since I made schnapps. Abigail forbid it to me, but I think it is OK if we have a drink in her honor. She wanted you to have this necklace in case of her parting...

I can't get that railroad station business out of my thoughts. I think I found out what plans Butch holds. This morning there was a story in the paper stating that the Southern Pacific Railroad company is planning to develop a railroad system in this area. But for that they need to build a bridge over the river... And the best place for this bridge is your land. Be careful, I have a bad feeling about this.
Finish

Finish
Butch is a hothead! But you really didn't need to mess him up this badly. But listen to this, a strange guy named Mr Brown visited me earlier. He asked me about Nathan. Quest Giver Access requirements Requires Reward

10h

Start
What did you do to Butch? He just came to me, all intimidated, and wanted to talk. It's unbelievable what he had to say! Mr. Brown gave him a lot of money to build this railroad station and to buy our farm. In return, Butch was to transfer the papers into Mr. Brown's name for the ranch, the farm and the railroad station, so that Brown could sell it as a package to the Southern Pacific Railroad company. Both Butch and Mr. Brown would have made a lot of money in this deal. Got it so far? But then, Butch got really nervous when he realized that Mr. Brown is a very impatient business partner who was also behind the attacks on our farm. It's very likely that Mr. Brown is also responsible for the massacre of Butch's cattle. It looks like this guy will do anything to get what he wants. It drove him nuts that he couldn't get me to sell. Butch apologized to me and offered to help fight Mr. Brown. We'll reinforce the doors and windows of this house and take turns standing guard. We won't take any more risks!
Finish
It's strangely quiet around here lately. The calm before the storm? I think I told you about Waupee's grandfather and his magical powers? I went back to him yesterday to ask for his advice. He took his bone necklace and fawned it through his herbal fire. The strength of Manitu shall lie in the man wearing it. But you know... I think this is going a bit far. But then, the shamans have knowledge about things that we will never understand.

I've made some inquiries about that mysterious Mr. Brown. Interesting guy. The Southern Pacific Railroad has already been offered two properties and a railroad station, and they are very interested. The offers are for Butch's and Nathan's land. Then Butch's story seems to be true. My contact with the Southern Pacific also told me where Mr. Brown spends his evenings. He says you can set your clocks by it. The place is called Cindy's Diner, and he shows up there every night at 7 p.m. to the minute. After dinner he drinks a bottle of whiskey and by 9 p.m. he's usually completely hammered. At around 11 p.m. he leaves the diner. I suggest that you go there and that you try to find some evidence. The location of Cindy's Diner is marked on the mini map with a yellow dot (Quest giver). It is located next to a town in the middle of the map.
Finish
If I had known that this guy would blow his top like this, I would never have suggested for you to go there alone. The letter that you took from Mr. Brown is the missing evidence that there is some lawless business going on behind closed doors at the Southern Pacific Railroad. There are always people that can be bribed... I'll try to find out more.

I've been lying awake all night long trying to find out what the next steps should be. Such a big company as Southern Pacific won't just give in without a fight. There will be others that will try to get our land. And they might be more dangerous than that Mr. Brown. I would never forgive myself if something happened to you because I was so stubborn. I will transfer the farm's ownership to you. It is your choice what you want to do with it. If you want to sell it, I will understand. Don't worry about me.
Finish
Good that you are rational and that you are not trying to convince me otherwise. I was never rich, but I still never missed anything. All the things I love are priceless anyway. I decided to build a small hut up at the Wolf Creek, close to where your parents, and now Abigail, are buried. I'll be closer to her then. A few days ago, one of the higher-ups at the Southern Pacific Railroad was in the saloon. He seemed to like my dancing a lot and now he keeps sending me candy and flowers. I heard that Nathan wants to transfer his farm to you. That is your chance! Do you even know what kind of money they are talking about? The Southern Pacific could save tons of money if they can build their railroad tracks straight across that land, and they're willing to pay $12,000 for the farm. I could get that deal started and I would only take a very small part of it as a commission. That would leave you with a lot of money. Don't you think you deserve this after all that hard work for those many years? At this point you have to choose one of three turns of events. You cannot undo your choice. I have a hot lead here. It looks like Southern Pacific is entangled in a corruption scandal that goes all the way to the highest level. It will take a while to collect the necessary evidence to start a lawsuit. But I'm sure that we can win and that a lot of farmers can get their land back. It's pretty much a miracle that you still haven't lost the farm. Others who tried to resist the Southern Pacific Railroad weren't so lucky. At this point you have to choose one of three turns of events. You cannot undo your choice. Listen well to what Maya and Henry have to tell you before finishing the quest.

Such a case takes a lot of perseverance. It can take years until the guilty ones are convicted. I'm very thankful that you are going to help me. Nathan can be very proud of you and I know Abigail would have wanted nothing more than that you fight for the right thing.
