Hi, I'm glad you came to see me today. Many Mexicans in our city celebrate the Day of the Dead, walk around in colorful dresses and very few of us know what it means. I was talking about it with an elderly woman the other day and it was really interesting. As the saloon is not so popular lately because Henry is always serving something I don't like. I have some time now and I would like to not only tell you about the traditions of the Día de Muertos, but also experience them together with you. We will be on the road for a few hours. Ready? I don't even dare to ask Henry for provisions, who knows what that'll be and what he will pack for us. Get our horses ready!
Finish
Let's go! We're going old school first.

Oh, the lesson has already started! Let's sneak in and listen to the old woman. She may have a hint of what we can do to experience it in practice.Old woman: First things first! Día de Muertos, the Day of the Dead, is not a Mexican version of Halloween. Although the two holidays are related, they are very different in their traditions and atmosphere. Halloween is traditionally considered a dark night of terror and disaster, while the Día de Los Muertos stretches over three days in an explosion of color and life-affirming joy. Of course, the theme is death, but the purpose of the whole thing is to show his love and respect for deceased family members. In villages and cities all over Mexico, celebrations display colorful costumes and make-up, organized processions and parties, singing, dancing and offering gifts to the beloved deceased. We need chalk for the blackboard.
Finish
Save the candles and matches well, you will need them. Come along now, all of you! - says the old woman and you follow her.

La Ofrenda

This quest is only available from 05/11 at 12:00 until the 23/11 at 12:00
05/11 12:00 - 23/11 12:00

Start
We are gathered at a cemetery. There is respectful silence and the old woman proudly continues to tell her story:Old woman: The heart of the celebration is the Altar, or Ofrenda, which is either built at home or in a cemetery. But these altars are not for worshipping: they are meant to welcome the spirits of the dead into the realm of the living. They are therefore richly endowed with gifts - water to quench the thirst of the long journey, food, family photographs and a candle for each dead relative. If one of the spirits is a child, you may also find toys on the altar. Marigold is the most popular flowers to decorate the altar. The flowers scattered from the altar to the tomb are meant to guide the wandering souls back to their resting place. The smoke from the incense candles, which are made from tree resin, are said to convey praise and prayers and to cleanse the area around the altar. So, now you are going to build an altar with the help of many others. For this you have to collect a lot of things.
Finish
Slowly, but surely the altar is starting to look beautiful.

The old woman now continues: Calavera means "skull". But during the late 18th and early 19th century the word was often used for short, humorous poems. These were often satirical epitaphs that appeared in newspapers and made fun of the living. These literary Calaveras eventually became a popular part of the Día de Muertos celebrations, as many now create short poems describing interesting habits and attitudes or funny anecdotes of the deceased.

In the biggest library used to be in the Ghost Town. You will find some funny poems there.

What a rubble...!I see error after error, and you tell me I only create terror? He was tired of all the duelsGreat anger in him that fuels! Then he had to go and sleepYes, that also made him weep.

Start
You found another interesting story in the library. You have seen the "La Catrina" many times before, but how did she get to look like this?In the early 20th century, the Mexican political caricaturist and engraver José Guadalupe Posada created an engraving for a literary Calavera. Posada gave his personification of death a fancy French hat. The whole thing was intended as a social commentary on the Mexican imitation of European sophistication. The quotation "Todos somos Calaveras" is often attributed to Posada - translated it means "We are all skulls". Among all outward appearances we are all equal.Later, the artist Diego Rivera used Posada's skeleton in his masterpiece, the mural "Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in Alameda Park.” Posada's skeleton bust also wore a large lady's hat and Rivera nicknamed it Catrina, a slang word for rich people. Today, Calavera Catrina, the elegant skull, is probably the most ubiquitous symbol of the Día de Muertos. You also want to wear a fancy hat for the party later. Hopefully you can find one in your wardrobe, otherwise you will have to go shopping.
Finish
Well, the hat still fits. We'll decorate it later. Return to Maya and tell her about your experience.

Hello my dear friend, do you have all the ingredients? Really? I don't want to be blamed again if something doesn't work out. That kind of trouble is rather… unpleasant. We'll start with the sugar skulls. Ingredients for two sugar skulls:- 20 g of American meringue powder, which I bought- 675 g sugar- 30 ml water- Colorful sugar writing for the decoration- Sugar icing to put on the sugar skullsNow you mix everything until it is nice and sticky and press it into the molds. Then you c-a-u-t-i-o-u-s-l-y loosen the mold… I said CAUTIOUSLY , ... Ok, let's try this again. After a while...That's it! This will now dry until tomorrow, then we'll paint them nicely. With what? Oh, didn't you get any dye? Come on now, you still have time until tomorrow.
Finish
You are looking forward to tomorrow.

Finish
Excellent! Very good! You're really good at what you do, you know? Unfortunately, we can't cook all the traditional Día de Muertos dishes, since we don't have all the needed products. There is the Pulque for example, a sweet, fermented drink made from agave juice. Or Atole, a thin, warm porridge made from corn flour with unrefined cane sugar, cinnamon and vanilla. And hot chocolate of course. Maybe next year… Hopefully more settlers will arrive with new crops and cooking skills.

I hope you had fun with Henry in the kitchen. The Día de Muertos is a very sociable event, where there is something going on in the streets and public places at any time of day or night. Dressing up as a skeleton is a traditional part of the fun. People of all ages paint their faces to resemble skulls. In the style of Catrina, they wear suits or fancy dresses. There is dancing in the streets, plazas or gardens of a town, with colorful costumes, and skull-shaped masks. Many wear shells or other noisemakers that add to the atmosphere and are meant to wake up the dead so they can join in the celebrations. We already have the stylish hat, now we are looking for even more snazzy things in the wardrobe. Knowing you, I am sure it is nicely filled. Anything in particular? No, no, choose something in your favorite colors. The important thing is that we have "noisemakers". Look for some!

Wow, you've got yourself a nice necklace there. Change your clothes and then let's go and celebrate. And don't forget the candles and matches!

La Ofrenda, the decorated altar, shines wonderfully. You add your candles and light them. During a moment of silence, you remember your loved ones who have departed this world. Then it gets loud. Everyone rattles with their jewelry, and you, too, now dance along happily. You join the merry parade of skulls which is heading towards the church. Many petals, dyed sawdust and seeds lie in colorful patterns along the road.
Finish
What a great party that was! Dear Maya, thank you for all the shared experiences around Día de Muertos. We have been celebrating it for so many years and yet know so little about it...
